Prayer to St. Augustine by Pope John Paul II

O great Augustine, our father and teacher,
who knows the shining paths of God
and also the crooked paths of men,
we admire the marvels that divine Grace
has worked in you,
making you a passionate witness
to truth and goodness
at the service of your neighbour.

At the start of a new millennium marked by
the Cross of Christ,
teach us to read history
in the light of divine Providence,
which guides events to the
final encounter with the Father.
Guide us towards goals of peace,
kindling in our hearts
your own desire for the values
upon which we,
with the strength that comes from God,
can build the “city of Man”.

May the profound teaching that you drew,
with loving and patient study,
from the ever-living sources of Scripture
enlighten all who are tempted today
by alienating mirages.
May you obtain for them the courage
to set out on the way
towards that “inner man” in whom the One,
who alone can restore peace
to our restless hearts, awaits.

So many of our contemporaries seem to have
lost the hope of reaching,
amidst the many conflicting ideologies,
the truth that they continue to yearn for
in depths of their hearts.
Teach them never to give up their quest
in the certainty that,
in the end, their efforts will be rewarded
by the fulfilling encounter
with that, supreme Truth, who is the Source
of every created truth.

Lastly, O St Augustine,
communicate to us too a spark
of that burning love for the Church,
the Catholic mother of the Saints,
which sustained and gave life
to the efforts of your own long ministry.
Enable us, as we walk together under
the guidance of our legitimate Pastors,
to reach the glory of the heavenly Homeland
where, with all the Blesseds,
we can join in singing
the new and eternal Alleluia

Prayer

God of truth,
desire of all hearts,
we praise you for your love
that touched the heart of Augustine
and awakened in him the quest for your truth.
Attracted by the good things you made,
he learned to seek your face
and to know the joy of your presence.
The name of Christ, echoing from infancy in the depths of his heart,
called him back to your Word,
the teacher who dwells within.
With Augustine we praise the work of your love
and proclaim your action of grace in our lives.
Through the intercession of Augustine
we ask you to hear our prayer:
Here mention your request
Teach us daily to live by his example
so that our restless hearts may find your peace
and our lives may rejoice in your love.

St. Augustine, pray for us.

St. Augustine’s Canticle of Love

My love of you, God, is not some vague feeling;
It is positive and certain.
Your word struck into my heart
and from that moment I loved you.
Besides this, all about me,
heaven and earth and all that they contain
proclaim that I should love you.

But what do I love when I love you?
Not material beauty of a temporal order;
not the brilliance of earthly light;
not the sweet melody of harmony and song;
not the fragrance of flowers, perfumes, and spices;
not manna or honey;
and not limbs the body delights to embrace.

It is not these that I love when I love my God.
And yet, when I love him,
it is true that I love a light of a certain kind,
a voice, a perfume, a food, an embrace;
but they are the kind that I love in my inner self,
when my soul is bathed in light that is not bound by space;
when it listens to sound that never dies away;
when it breathes fragrance that is not borne away on the wind;
when it tastes food that is never consumed by the eating;
when it clings to an embrace from which
it is not severed by fulfillment of desire.
This is what I love when I love my God.

Novena to St. Augustine

Introductory Prayer
You have made our hearts for yourself O Lord, and they are restless until they rest in you.
We ask you to bless our restlessness in our search for you, so as you may live in our lives, and in the events confronting us.

Finding you, may we be faithful to you God of history, faithful to Christ our Lord and Savior, faithful to the Church and her teaching and faithful to our particular state of life which we have chosen to serve you.

O Wonderful St. Augustine, glorious on account of your wisdom and miracles and through the will of Jesus who conversed with you, disguised as a little child, the mystery of the Holy Trinity, obtain for me of his bounty the grace which I ardently desire from the depths of my heart. You who were so compassionate toward miserable sinners, regard not the unworthiness of those who pray to you, but the glory of God that it may once again be magnified by the granting of the particular request (mention them here) which I now ask for. Amen.

Prayer of St. Augustine
Lord Jesus, let me know myself and know you,
And desire nothing save only you.
Let me hate myself and love you.
Let me do everything for the sake of you.
Let me humble myself and exalt you.
Let me think of nothing except you.
Let me die to myself and live in you.
Let me accept whatever happens as from you.
Let me banish the self and follow you,
And ever desire to follow you.
Let me fly from myself and take refuge in you,
That I may deserve to be defended by you.
Let me fear for myself, let me fear you,
And let me be among those who are chosen by you.
Let me distrust myself and put my trust in you.
Let me be willing to obey for the sake of you.
Let me cling to nothing save only to you,
And let me be poor because of you.
Look upon me, that I may love you.
Call me that I may see you,
And for ever enjoy you. Amen.

Augustine Day by Day – 11/22

Pine for the Homeland
Now let us hear, brothers and sisters, let us hear and sing. Let us pine for the city where we are citizens. By pining, we are already there. We have already cast our hope, like an anchor, on that coast.

I sing of somewhere else, not of here; for I sing with my heart, not my flesh. The citizens of Babylon hear the sound of the flesh; the founder of Jerusalem hears the tune of the heart. -- Commentary on Psalm 64, 3

Prayer
Lord, let us make our home again in you and thus avoid being lost. Long ago we left it--for what is our home but your Eternity, which does not disappear because we have deserted it! -- Confessions 4, 16
